Mata Vaishno Devi

The holy cave shrine of Vaishno Devi is situated in northern India Trikuta Mountains in the Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir, India.

When people say "Jai Mata Di," they feel a lot of love and power in their hearts.

People believe that you can only visit this holy temple when Mata Rani calls you. This divine call is called the "Bulawa".

The Story of Maa Vaishno Devi

Long ago, Goddess Vaishnavi went up the Trikuta Mountains to pray. A man named Bhairavnath followed her and created trouble. To protect herself and meditate peacefully, Mata Rani made a special journey:

  • Banganga: Mata shot an arrow into the ground to create a river so Hanumanji could drink water.
  • Charan Paduka: She stopped here to look back, leaving her footprints on a rock.
  • Ardhkuwari Cave: She hid inside a small cave called Garbhjoon and prayed for 9 months.
  • The Final Battle: When Bhairavnath found her again, Mata took the form of Kali and killed him. Before dying, Bhairavnath asked for forgiveness. Mata forgave him and said, "Every pilgrimage to my shrine will be complete only after visiting your temple too."

Inside the main cave, there are no idols. Instead, you see three holy stones called Pindies:

  • Maha Kali (gives strength)
  • Maha Lakshmi(gives wealth)
  • Maha Saraswati (gives knowledge)

Important Stops on the Way

The walk starts from a small town called Katra. The total walking distance to the main temple is about 13 km.

  • Katra: Starting point of the journey.
  • Banganga (1 km): Devotees wash their hands and feet in this holy water.
  • Charan Paduka (3 km): The spot with Mata's footprints.
  • Ardhkuwari (6 km): Halfway point where the famous cave is located.
  • Sanjichhat (9.5 km): The highest flat point where helicopters land.
  • Main Bhawan (13 km): The holy cave where you get Darshan of the Pindies.
  • Bhairav Nath Temple (2.5 km from Bhawan): The last stop of your Yatra.

Easy Tips for Your Trip

  • Yatra Registration Slip: You must get a Yatra pass (RFID Card) in Katra or online before walking up.
  • Easy Ways to Travel: If you cannot walk long distances, you can use horses, battery cars, or helicopter services.
  • Bhairav Temple Cable Car: You can take a quick ropeway ride from the main temple to Bhairav Nath Temple instead of climbing.
  • What to Wear: Wear comfortable walking shoes. Bring light warm clothes for summer and heavy winter jackets if you go between November and February.

Modes of Travel (Getting to the Bhawan)

The main shrine (Bhawan) is roughly 13 to 14 km from the base camp at Katra. You can choose how to complete the journey based on your fitness and convenience:

  • By Foot (Trekking): The classic, deeply rewarding way. The path is completely paved, well-lit, and lined with shelters and food stalls.
  • Helicopter Service: Operates between Katra and Sanjichhat. From Sanjichhat, the Bhawan is a gentle 2.5 km walk (approx. 30-40 minutes). Note: Tickets must be booked exclusively through the official Shrine Board website.
  • Pony, Palki (Palanquin), or Pitthoo (Porter): Traditional options available at fixed, government-regulated rates for children, the elderly, or those unable to walk long distances.
  • Battery Cars: Available on specific stretches (such as from Adhkuwari to Bhawan), primarily prioritized for senior citizens and persons with disabilities.

Visiting Maa Vaishno Devi brings peace and happiness to the mind. If you are planning to go, just say with love: "Jai Mata Di!"
